VocabuLarry is a simple program to help you improve your vocabulary in the foreign language of your choice. This is an initial beta release, but I don't anticipate any major problems (but then again, who ever does). I'm releasing it now because school just started and I won't have any time to work in it for 10 weeks.
Using the program is fairly straightforward. lang a->b and lang b->a shows you a word, and you're expected to type in the translation. Flash Cards and Flash Cards2 shows a word (and says the word if you've recorded it), waits a few seconds, and then shows the translation. You can change the "german" and "english" with "optionsﾉ". There's some (actually very little) balloon help in case you get stuck (and have system 7).
In the edit words dialog, a word with a voice will have a large, black dot to the left of it (Actually, it doesn't appear in system 6 - I have no idea why). Double-click on it to play it. To record a voice for the translation, click on the square with the circle in it. Clicking on the word will play the voice. Pressing command-n is the same as clicking on the new button, so you can add a bunch of words without leaving the keyboard. Also, the cancel button only cancels changes you may have made to the words already in the list. It does not cancel deletes or new words added to the list. (This will eventually be changed).
Suggestions I would like :
- First and foremost I would like a new name. I needed to call it something, and since my name is Larry, I thought it would be kind of cute to call it VocabuLarry. Although I must admit that it's starting to grow on me.
- New names for the menu items, along with a corresponding command key. Flash Cards and Flash Cards2 are kind of weak. a->b and b->a will eventually get changed to whatever languages you have chosen. I don't have the time right now.
- Any ideas for a new icon. Or if you would like to draw one for me...
Also tell me what you would like to see added to the program. I'm completely open to any suggestions (within reason please). I was thinking of adding a 'dictionary' command, that would allow you to enter a word, and the program would search through your files and find it's translation. If I get some response, I'll do it, if not, then I'll probably do it anyway.
Things I'll add eventually :
- Command keys for the buttons, especially when you're editing a word list. e.g., command-r for record, etc.
